Alfa Romeo - a sportscar for everyone
Alfa Romeo has been a prominent player in the car manufacturing world since its creation in 1910 in the outskirts of Milan. What Alfa Romeo managed to do so successfully, and continues to do to this day, was to introduce the possibility of owning a track-worthy unique sportscar to everyday people, with many of its models going down in history as being true classics. If you are passionate about Alfa Romeos, or about classic cars in general (whether you want to buy or sell them), Catawiki is the perfect place to discover a wide range of vintage cars.
The history of Alfa Romeo
The Italian car manufacturer was founded as A.L.F.A. This stands for Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili, translated as Anonymous Lombard Automobile Factory. It came about after Cavalier Ugo Stella gained ownership of a French car factory just outside Milan. In 1924 a new director was appointed, Nicola Romeo, hence the foundations of the name we know so well today. Alfa Romeo has been a big player on the classic car racing tracks since 1911, appearing and winning many races at Le Mans 24-hours and Mille Miglia. Within just one year of existence, its 24 HP car was already a legend in the racing field and by the twenties, Alfa Romeo cars had taken their place amongst the racing greats. The company's biggest hurdle came in 1944 when the production of Alfa Romeo cars ground to a halt as its factory was victim to an aerial bombing raid. Production ceased and only resumed at the end of WW2. However the company picked up where it left off and headed into years of continuing success stories in the sporting field, as well as channelling more focus into the production of unique cars that were not only manufactured to perfection but also visually appealing.
It is no surprise therefore that there are several Alfa Romeo models that are accredited with the title of being classic cars. The original Alfa Romeo Spider for example was launched in 1966 and was manufactured in four diverse series, which are favoured amongst many collectors. But also more modern versions, such as the Alfa Romeo GT that was produced between 2003 and 2010, proved to be very popular amongst car enthusiasts.
Alfa Romeo - the movie star
Classic Alfa Romeo cars have made several cameo appearances on the big screen. One of the most notable is in ‘The Godfather’ where a 6C model takes centre stage. In addition to this a 1958 2000 Berlina and a 1960 Giulietta both starred in the hit ‘The Pink Panther’ in the hunt of a diamond thief. The Alfa Romeo GTV6 even made it into the James Bond movie 'Octopussy' making this classic car truly unique.
The roots of Alfa Romeo
The emblem of Alfa Romeo is amongst the most historical and ancient of all vintage car brands. On one side there is a red cross on a white background, which is the symbol of Milan, where the company was founded. On the other side is the symbol of the Visconti family, one of the most established and important families in Milan, which features a snake with a human coming out of its mouth. Even though the Alfa Romeo name changed in the past, the emblem maintained the same and hence can be found on Alfa Romeo classics but also younger versions, such as the Alfa Romeo GT (Type 937) and the Alfa Romeo GTV (Type 916) and several versions of the Alfa Romeo Spider.
